The lion is the second largest cat.

The lion is the only social cat and lives in family groups called a "pride." The pride typically consists of several females (often related), a few males and cubs of various ages.

Lions are nocturnal.

An adult lion's roar can be heard up to 5 miles away.

Lions mark their territory by spraying bushes and trees and by scratching tree trunks.

Males are responsible for defending the pride and guarding the territory.

Females are responsible for most of the hunting, which is done primarily at night.

Male lions are the only big cats that look different from the females.
